My contractor is asking for more money. What should I do?
Don’t send more money until you know what it’s for. Ask your contractor to explain in writing what the extra money covers, then check it against your agreement and the work actually done on site.
- Ask for the reason in writing – what the money is for, how much, and which part of the work it covers.
- Compare it with your agreement – check whether that work was already included in the price you agreed.
- Check the work done so far – make sure the current milestone is complete before you pay toward the next one.
- Ask for proof of new costs – receipts or supplier quotes if material prices went up.
- Put any new amount in writing – if you agree to pay more, record the amount and exactly what it covers.
